Awards Ceremony & Reception

The awards ceremony and reception was held at the Trini Mendenhall Community Center with contestants, advisors, competition partners, sponsors and community supporters in attendance.

Zach Speaking 2016 BPC JV2_3648 Dr. Zachary Hodges, President, HCC Northwest opened the ceremony.

“Our competition gets better every year thanks to an extraordinary collaboration between accomplished business leaders and an entrepreneurial college.  I personally want to thank visionary leaders Jack Barry and Richard Tyler, as well as Sandra Louvier, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Robert Westheimer, Founder and Chairman of Newspring, our primary partner.  Also invaluable to the competition is the outstanding support by mentors, judges, sponsors, and staff.
I believe that Human Capital Development = Economic Development = Community Development.  This practical working competition pairs experienced trainers and mentors with aspiring and existing entrepreneurs primed for success through HCC’s entrepreneurial programs.  Stay tuned for our tenth competition as we continue to empower small business to create jobs and positively impact our community.”

Jack Speaking 2016 BPC JV2_3741 Jack Barry, Competition Leader, addressed the crowd and called upon others to speak.

“The 2016 BPC contestants demonstrated the enthusiasm, the desire to improve, the willingness to learn and the competitiveness to build and grow successful companies.  It was a pleasure to work with the contestants and watch their growth through the competition.  Over 60 successful business people volunteered their time to make the competition successful by serving as trainers, advisors and judges.   The contestants and volunteers worked together to contribute to a promising future for Houston business.”

Robert Westheimer, Newspring Founder and Chairman, spoke of the 9-year strategic partnership between HCC and Newspring.  Next, competition trainer Richard Tyler took the stage to inspire and encourage teams to strive for excellence.  Jack Barry then recognized past winners and all 26 completer teams for the 2016 competition.   Next, Barry called up finalists to the stage to speak about their business concepts and then he announced the winners and awarded prize money!

“One of the pillars of America’s economic greatness was forged when the Founding Fathers created a system of government that was intended to unlock and reward the entrepreneurial spirit of those so inclined to believe in their business ideas and take the associated risks to bring them to reality. The men and women engaged in this competition have taken the early steps to prove out their concepts and move toward the much coveted description of  Entrepreneur,” Richard Tyler.
