From Freelancing to Starting Your Own Business in Media Arts & Technology Draws 65 & Sparks Connections

fftsyob-erik-jimmy-crowdOctober 26, 2016:  Houston Community College’s “From Freelancing to Starting Your Own Business in Media Arts and Technology (MA&T) Disciplines” workshop drew 65 attendees to at HCC Alief Hayes. They came from both inside HCC and from the surrounding community.

fftsyob-crowd-2-26-150717The crowd included aspiring and existing freelancers, seasoned entrepreneurs and instructors (film making & digital communications, IT) and small business owners looking to hire freelancers. Ages ranged from teenagers from the Alief Early College High School through seasoned senior citizens.

fftsyob-jimmy-n-student26-182444Speakers included Dr. Jimmy Adams, who is Director of HCC’s Center of Excellence in Media Arts and Technology and past owner of a Graphics Design company. Dr. Adams took the group through varying stages including proceeding straight to establishing a dba (filing “Doing Business As” company name) and “doing freelancing right” from the start.

ffstyob-erik-calderonErik Calderon, also spoke as an example of a MA& T student who has grown from freelancer to small business owner by leveraging HCC opportunities, including the HCC Filmmaking Academy, entrepreneurship classes and participation in the HCC Newspring Business Plan Competition.  “I’ve increased my business by $50,000 from the plan I created with the mentoring and training I received in the competition.”

Todd Bermont, past winner of the HCC Newspring Business Plan Competition and owner of TCC Learning, spoke on how to present yourself as a freelancer and bring in business.

The workshop was highly interactive, with many in the room earning “millions” for their part in Q&A and practicing their pitches..that is… they earned “million dollar chocolate bars!”

Networking abounded as well, as small business owners connected with freelancers, and others asked for mentoring appointments and class information from the HCC Northwest Center for Entrepreneurship to pursue development of their plans to freelance and/or launch or grow their businesses through the HCC Newspring Business Plan Competition in Spring 2017.

The group asked for more training and opportunities ahead and the Center for Entrepreneurship at HCC Northwest and Center of Excellence in Media Arts and Technology plan to do just that! For more information visit hccbizconnect.org.
