Connie Rankin, Lifelong Learner Credits HCC in Helping Her Become an Entrepreneur, Philanthropist and Author
From the 1980s Through Now, Connie Rankin has come to HCC for numerous HCC real estate courses, the HCC Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, the HCC Newspring Business Plan Competition, the SBA’s InnovateHER Competition and HCC writing courses. This all became a springboard for pursuing and accomplishing her dreams. With the help of HCC and others, Connie has: launched and grown her award winning company Customized Real Estate Services; established Bridge Literacy Now, a non-profit entity dedicated to helping poverty stricken women attain their GED and improving children’s reading skills by 4th grade; and she has authored God Gave Us Wings, which is in pre-sales now and scheduled for release in April, 2017. Connie gives back as well. She is donating $1,000 in prize money to the 2017 HCC Newspring Business Plan Competition and a portion of the proceeds from her book sales to the Center for Entrepreneurship at HCC Northwest.
Entrepreneur: Connie is a lifelong learner and continues coming back to Houston Community College to sharpen her skills; dating back to the 1980s when she first took numerous real estate courses. After refining her expertise at another real estate company, she launched Customized Real Estate Services (CRES) in 2001. She returned to HCC in 2012 to create a plan to grow CRES in the HCC Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program. She implemented her growth plan quickly and entered the 2013 Business Plan Competition to plan further growth. CRES has become an award-winning commercial real estate firm that is the Houston affiliate of ITRA Global with over 45 locations worldwide. Connie has also become a nationally-recognized leader in empowering and motivating others. In 2013, she was recognized by the Houston Business Journal as one of Houston’s Fastest 100 Growing Private Companies and as the #1 Fastest-Growing Woman-Owned Businesses.
Philanthropist & Author
Non-Profit: Connie says not only did the HCC Newspring Business Plan Competition empower her to grow CRES further, it also inspired her to start a non-profit and write a book. In 2014, she used her business plan experience to write a book proposal and it resulted in her landing a top literary agent and a publisher. Later In 2015, Connie had the opportunity to participate in the Innovate Her competition offered by the SBA and HCC. The only drawback – she had to prepare a full business plan for her non-profit within five days to meet the deadline. “Connie said, no worries, I can do this – because I participated in the HCC Newspring Business Plan Competition back in 2013!” Ms. Rankin has since launched her non-profit, Bridge Literacy Now, which is dedicated to helping poverty stricken women attain their GED and improving children’s reading skills by 4th grade.
Author & Supporter of HCC: Since then, Connie has also taken several writing courses at HCC and her 1st book “God Gave Us Wings” is due to release in April 2017. Connie gives back as well. She is donating $1,000 in prize money to the 2017 HCC Newspring Business Plan Competition and a portion of the proceeds from her book sales to the Center for Entrepreneurship at HCC Northwest. “I’m thankful to HCC for the variety of courses and programs that have allowed me to achieve my dreams of entrepreneurship, giving back to the community, and becoming a published author. ”
