Liftoff Houston Start-Up Business Plan Competition-Starting a Business Workshop

The Liftoff Houston Start-Up Business Plan Competition engages and empowers Houstonians to achieve their dream of owning a business.  The competition provides aspiring entrepreneurs with access to the essential tools, resources and support necessary to develop a sound business plan, as a first step towards this goal.  The five month long competition consists of four stages: orientation, workshops, mentoring and business pitching.

The Application Period is Done and Liftoff Houston Contestants are chosen!  Now workshops begin for Liftoff Training!

For those of you who missed the application deadline, we have good news, you can still attend the training workshops! 

More good news:  Houston Community College is a proud annual supporter of the Liftoff Houston Startup Competition.  In 2017, we will participate in the workshop training for the Starting a Business workshops and the Marketing workshops.  Scroll Down for More on the Workshops and our Presenters.

Meet our Presenters

Starting a Business Workshop

  • mo-tehrani-head-shot-closer-199x300Dr. Mohammad (“Mo”) Tehrani started his first business in 1995.  He has co-owned and still co-owns and/or invests in multiple businesses in varying sectors:  real estate, pharmacy; security systems; and accounting. Currently he is a consulting partner with a public accounting firm in Houston, Texas.  He is also a full-time professor of accounting at Houston Community College.  Dr. Tehrani, started out in neurochemistry and has a BS in Biology/Geology, an M.Ph in Human Biology, a Ph.D in Neurochemistry.  When he and his brother ventured into business ownership, he also enrolled in the Accounting program at University of Houston and became a CPA in 1999.   Mo has volunteered with various organizations such as the BCM-Credit Union, where he served on the Board of Directors. He joined SCORE in July 2012 and has served as Chapter Treasurer and Education Assistant Director, in addition to his ongoing role providing counseling to small business owners and current role as Vice Chair of SCORE Houston.  He now serves as lead mentor at the HCC Alief Hayes Center for Entrepreneurship providing one-on-mentoring to aspiring and existing entrepreneurs.  Throughout his multi-faceted career, Dr. Tehrani has mentored numerous graduate students and taught courses in Biological Sciences, Financial and Managerial Accounting, Individual and Business Tax and Audit at undergraduate and graduate levels. He has published more than 60 articles, many of them in peer reviewed magazines.

  • Valerie MaherValerie Maher, Lead Economic Development Specialist, SBA, Houston District. Prior to joining the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Houston District Office in January 2017, Ms. Maher spent the previous 10 years working for the SBA’s National Guaranty Purchase Center in Herndon, VA as a Supervisory Loan Specialist. Ms. Maher was responsible for reviewing the origination, closing, servicing, and liquidation of 7a loans in order to process lender guaranty claims on defaulted small business loans. In her new role, Ms. Maher will collaborate with an extensive network of public and private sector partners and represent the SBA at a variety of public functions through outreach and presentations/trainings in order to educate the small business community and economic development stakeholders about SBA programs and services and other small business topics.  Prior to joining the SBA, Ms. Maher processed and underwrote real estate loans. Ms. Maher is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a BBA in Management Information Systems.

  • David RegenbaumDavid Regenbaum was Owner and Operator of Association Management, Inc. (AMI) from 1979-2010. AMI achieved remarkable growth and prestige under his leadership for over 36 years, resulting in AMI becoming the leading community association management firm in Texas, managing over 300 communities consisting of over 100,000 homes and commercial units. Many of his innovative management philosophies and practices have become industry standards.  In 2010, he sold AMI to FirstService Residential Houston, the largest community association management company in America.  Regenbaum then served as President of FirstService Residential Houston for the next four years, before “retiring.”  Much to our benefit, David’s altruistic encore career is dedicated to empowering Houston’s startup and existing small business owners and to instilling entrepreneurial skills in the greater Houston area workforce through Houston Community College and the Silver Fox Advisors.  More on David 

  • S louvier w pkrSandra Louvier, Director, Center for Entrepreneurship, HCC Northwest, has 17 years experience in economic feasibility analysis and appraisal in the hospitality industry.  She honed her craft at PKF Consulting, Laventhol and Horwath and Marriott International, before starting her own consulting practice.  Later, she served for nine years as U.S. Real Estate Director for the Haagen-Dazs Shoppe Company, Inc., franchise company.  In 2009, she helped launch the Center for Entrepreneurship (c4e) and later came on board as director.  Her efforts have since been recognized through the NACCE National Impact Award (National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship) and the Center has expanded services and offerings and grown to two locations.  This year, the Houston District Small Business Administration and SCORE recognized Ms. Louvier and the Center for Entrepreneurship as the 2017 Houston District Home-Based Business Champion Ms. Louvier and HCC share the recognition with all internal and external partners and the home-based business owners that have sought launch and growth through HCC’s entrepreneurial programs!

Business Marketing Workshop

AAEAAJohn WhaleyJohn Whaley, Business Advisor, HCC Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses – John Whaley is a strategic business planner that serves as a business advisor as well as a Modules 2 – Growth and Opportunity and Module 6 – Marketing and Sales Mod Faculty for the program. John filed his first DBA at the age of 16 and worked passionately in the community to support entrepreneurship at all levels for the past 30 years. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Western Governors University as well as his Masters of Business Administration degree.  More on John
