webBruce-104 crop to head shot (1)Bruce McMordie, owner of Texas Swim Academy, and his wife Kathleen started out at a SCORE seminar years ago to pursue their dream to turn giving back yard swimming lessons into a business.  Since then, they have opened their business, gone through HCC programs and won the HCC Newspring Business Plan Competition.  He has recently brought son William into this family business in a larger way to assist with marketing and expansion plans.  Bruce and his family are currently pursuing an expansion of their business by adding competitive swim team facilities and training programs.

Since 1976, he has been involved in appraising and selling small to midsize businesses, including manufacturing, distribution, retail and service companies. He and his staff have sold over 1,000 businesses in Texas and the Southwest United States.  As President of Certified Appraisers, Inc., he manages the firm’s multi-discipline appraisal practice, including the valuation of businesses, machinery and equipment, and real estate.  He frequently testifies in depositions and courts of law as an expert witness on valuation issues. His clients include closely held companies, publicly-held companies, the IRS and other governmental agencies. As a member of SCORE, the U. S. Small Business Administration’s business consulting group, Jeff serves as an instructor and counselor for entrepreneurs starting new businesses, or helping existing business owners improve their profitability.   Jeff is the co-editor of the Handbook of Business Valuation and Mergers and Acquisitions Handbook for Small and Midsize Companies published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Texas Swim Academy WWqtPGi-Bruce McMordie is co-owner with his wife, Kathleen McMordie, of Texas Swim Academy in Katy, Texas. Texas Swim Academy is a full service learn to swim facility with programs for children aged five months and older through adults. Bruce attended Texas A&M University and graduated with a degree in Marine Engineering. After graduation, Bruce served in the United States Merchant Marine as a ship’s engineer.  Following his seagoing experience, Bruce obtained employment as a control systems engineer and eventually as a project manager. In these roles, Bruce designed, built and installed control systems for clients in the pulp and paper, metals and mining, specialty chemicals, commercial power and petrochemicals industries. While Bruce worked full time in project management, Kathleen started a home based swimming instruction business based on the Infant Aquatic Survival training program in 2004. The swimming instruction business experienced steady growth and by 2009, the business had outgrown the capacity of their backyard pool. Bruce joined the business full time in 2010 and the dedicated aquatics facility was opened in 2012.
